Gireum Tteokbokki (Baek Jong-won's Oil Tteokbokki)

Baek Jong-won's gireum tteokbokki — chewy rice cakes tossed in a spicy seasoning and pan-fried in oil for a nutty finish! The rice cakes are briefly blanched, coated in sauce, and slowly fried in oil, making a brothless, old-school style tteokbokki.

  • Rice cakes (tteok)1 pack (600 g)
  • Chopped green onion1 handful
  • Minced garlic1 tbsp
  • Red pepper flakes (gochugaru)2 tbsp
  • Soy sauce1.5 tbsp
  • Sugar1 tbsp
  • Sesame oil1 tbsp
  • Cooking oila little (for frying)

    First, briefly blanch one pack of rice cakes in boiling water.

    Mix a handful of chopped green onion, 1 tbsp minced garlic, 2 tbsp red pepper flakes, 1.5 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp sugar, and 1 tbsp sesame oil to make the seasoning sauce.

    Drain the blanched rice cakes in a sieve, toss them evenly in the sauce, then add to an oiled pan and fry over low heat so they don't burn, until done.

Tips

Blanch the rice cakes only briefly and drain them well before coating so the sauce sticks. Fry slowly over low heat so the rice cakes brown without burning.
